The worldaccording toLéon

Walter Rainer Leonhardt started painting at fourteen and waited until he was fifty-seven to sell anything. This is every work the estate holds — from the fantastic cats that reached museums in Amsterdam, Nice and Lausanne to the three-metre Terra X.

Eleven series

He worked in sets, not one-offs

Léon rarely painted a subject once. He would take an idea — a cat, a walled-in figure, a raven — and run it until it was finished with him. Three of these series are published here for the first time.

The artist

A life, painted late

Born in Vienna, raised in San Remo, at home in four languages and no country in particular. Léon painted for most of a century and let almost nobody see it until 1990.

The cats travelled further than he did. Today they are held in museums in Amsterdam, Nice, Lausanne and Ainville, and forty-two of them were published as a catalogue by the Galerie du Marché in Montreux under the title Les chats fantastiques.
